Palm Springs is the one place we serve where the summer bill can pass $600 in a modest house. It’s also where a system designed for Fontana would underperform: panels lose output in 115°F heat, and flat roofs need a different mount. We design for the desert, not around it.

Palm Springs homes are on Edison’s lines, and most get their electricity generation through Desert Community Energy, the local community choice program, with Edison delivering it. Solar interconnection and export rules still follow Edison’s NEM 3.0. Time-of-use peak is 4 to 9 p.m., which in a Palm Springs summer is exactly when the air conditioner is working hardest.

The heat, and what it does to the size of the system
Palm Springs runs above 100°F for most of June through September and touches 115°F in July. Two things follow. Usage is enormous: air conditioning runs around the clock, and a 1,500-square-foot home can draw what a 3,000-square-foot Fontana house does. And panels derate in heat, producing less per watt on the hottest afternoons. We size with both in mind, which usually means a larger array and, on bigger homes, two Powerwalls.
Roofs in Palm Springs
Palm Springs is known for its mid-century homes, and most of them have flat or low-slope roofs with foam or torch-down surfaces. Panels go on tilt racks that bring them to the right angle without penetrating the membrane more than necessary, and the racks are engineered for the valley’s wind loads. Newer tracts in the north end and in the Escena and Four Seasons areas are tile.
Permits and turning it on
Permits go through the City of Palm Springs Building and Safety. Homes in the city’s historic districts and mid-century preservation areas may have visibility requirements for roof equipment, and we design low-profile arrays for them. The installation partner handles the drawings, the inspection, and Edison interconnection.
Associations. Country club communities and the gated tracts have architectural review. California’s Solar Rights Act applies, and we prepare the submission.

Do solar panels work in Palm Springs heat?
Yes, and they produce more per year than almost anywhere in the country because of the sun. They do lose some output on the hottest afternoons, so we size the array for the summer derate rather than for a lab spec sheet.
